Stephanie Frappart will referee Wednesday’s Champions League match between Real Madrid and Celtic.

The 38-year-old Frenchwoman has only refereed one previous Champions League match and is the first female to take charge of a match in UEFA’s elite competition. The assistants and VAR officials are male.

Frappart is clearly highly rated by UEFA and FIFA after refereeing at the last two Olympic Games she is one of 36 referees going to the World Cup Finals next month, once again there will be no Scottish referees involved.

Although Celtic can’t avoid finishing in fourth place in Group F, Real need to match RB Leipzig’s result away to Shakhtar Donetsk to secure top spot and be drawn against a runner-up in the draw for the last 16.

After winning their first three matches Carlo Ancelotti’s side have stumbled on the road with a draw away to Shakhtar followed by last week’s defeat away to RB Leipzig.
