Celtic overcame Hearts and VAR to move five points clear at the top of the SPFL with a 4-3 win at Tynecastle.

Nick Walsh and Steven McLean will dominate the headlines with a series of controversial decisions on the first weekend that VAR was used in the SPFL.

James Forrest headed Celtic in front in the 13th minute then Walsh blew early as Tony Ralston netted from an Aaron Mooy free-kick. After a delay McLean agreed with the decision.

In the 43rd minute Hearts were awarded a penalty, correctly picked up by McLean after Cameron Carter-Vickers clashed with Cammy Devlin.

Soon after Lawrence Shankland equaliser Celtic had the ball in the Hearts box, Michael Smith handled a pass from Forrest but Walsh and McLean doubled up to deny Celtic a penalty.

Shankland put Hearts in front in the 47th minute but Giorgos Giakoumakis and Daizen Maeda restored Celtic’s lead by the hour mark.

Walsh, correctly awarded a penalty against Moritz Jenz in the 65th minute, when Shankland’s shot was saved he followed up with Josh Ginnelly netting from a clearly offside position.

Rather than disallow the goal for offside McLean ordered a retake for infringement with Shankland scoring at the second time around.

Fortunately there was one more goal, Greg Taylor showing a strikers instinct to net from six yards out in the 76th minute but it will be Walsh and McLean that dominate the aftermatch discussions.
