It’s not six Champions League defeats and a place in the record books that is causing Ally McCoist most concern this week.

That record makes for grim viewing, highlighted by a 7-1 home defeat from Liverpool but it is matters across the city of Glasgow that is setting off alarm bells for the popular pundit.

Twice he has sat in the commentary box watching Celtic turn out emphatic Glasgow derby results with 3-0 and 4-0 scorelines fair reflections on the gulf between the two clubs.

Ibrox will host the next derby match, on January 2 with the fixture already a worry for McCoist.

After sharing his concerns about recruitment problems and the players being outrun in each of their six Champions League defeats The Sun reports the former Ibrox boss saying:

A bigger concern for me would be Rangers’ level of performance at Celtic Park in a couple of league games.

The results in the Champions League have disappointed me, one or two of them have shocked me, but I’m not overly concerned or surprised both teams have finished bottom of the group.

After 12 SPFL matches Celtic have a four point advantage over their city rivals but almost as relevent is goal difference advantage of 13.

Eight of those goals come from the September Glasgow derby but while Celtic have goals coming in from all areas Giovanni van Bronckhorst is largely dependent on Antonio Colak for goals with just one strike this season from Ryan Kent in 10 SPFL appearances.
