Ally McCoist fears that the gap at the top of the SPFL Premiership table is only going to get bigger.

On Saturday Celtic turned one point into three in the closing minutes of their home match against Dundee United.

The following day the former Ibrox boss was in the commentary box at McDiarmid Park as Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side slipped to a 2-1 defeat.

Over the last three rounds of fixtures Celtic have stretched their lead at the top of the table from two points to seven with the hoops winning 12 out of 13 matches this season to add to their record of 15 wins and three draws that took them to the title at the start of 2022.

Ange Postecoglou’s side also have a goal difference advantage of plus 16 over their city rivals with McCoist worried that whatever his old club try Celtic are slipping out of reach.

Listening to his appearance on TalkSPORT, The Sun reports McCoist saying:

The problem Rangers have got now is that they’re seven points behind Celtic.

In typical Celtic fashion – and that’s a compliment – lost a goal to make it 2-2 round about the 89th minute and still found time to score two goals because they’ve got something about them.

There’s a general concern and a real worry from the fans that the gap is going to get bigger, rather than smaller.

Before the World Cup break Celtic travel to Motherwell then host Ross County, on Wednesday Hearts visit Ibrox before van Bronckhorst takes his squad along the M8 to take on St Mirren.
