Leigh Griffiths could be offered a lifeline back into football.

Since finishing last season in League One with Falkirk the striker has effectively been frozen out of the game with the exception of two matches played for a regional league side in Australia.

Despite training at Livingston there appears to have been little demand for the former Celtic striker who made his last appearance for the hoops in July 2021 in a friendly match against West Ham.

Two years ago Griffiths scored for Scotland in their penalty shoot-out victory over Serbia to reach the finals of the European Championships, that was soon followed up by a goal in normal time and a penalty against Hearts as the hoops completed their fourth successive treble.

Now, six months after his last competitive match in Scotland, Football Scotland reports:

Greenock Morton are looking at the option of bringing Leigh Griffiths to Cappielow.

The former Celtic striker has found it difficult in recent times after leaving the Hoops and has been in training with Livingston in a bid to boost his fitness and win a deal elsewhere. The 32-year-old has most recently turned out for Mandurah City in Australia’s Football West State League Division but he wants to get his career back on track.

Ton boss Dougie Imrie is close with Livi’s David Martindale and Football Scotland understands a marquee signing at Cappielow is something the manager hopes to do as he chases Premiership promotion from the second tier.

It is understood a possible short-term offer could be on the table from the January window – when Griff can join a new club – until the summer.

With a Scottish Cup tie at Celtic Park coming up in January Morton’s slice of the gate money would more than cover Griffiths’ wages.
