Michael Beale is expected to sign a contract to replace Giovanni van Bronckhorst but he is refusing to accept the transfer budget given to the Dutchman.

Under Steven Gerrard a net spend of £10m was provided in the summer’s of 2018, 2019 and 2020. When that funding was frozen in 2021 Gerrard was off to Aston Villa with Beale following two steps behind.

In January Nathan Patterson was sold for £5.5m with Amad Diallo and Aaron Ramsey signed on loan. During the summer a £4.9m surplus was generated with seven Ross Wilson signings added to the wage bill.

Having delivered a Europa League Final place and reached the group stage of the Champions League van Bronckhorst was given virtually nothing back to spend on the squad. Not one player was signed from Holland despite having a three man Dutch management team.

Beale will be well aware of those circumstances, and the fact that Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent, Steve Davis, Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack, Filip Helander and Allan McGregor are a month away from being able to sign pre-contract deals elsewhere.

Michael Beale is expected to be in Glasgow on Monday to finalise dream move to Rangers. And the deal could even be announced exactly one week on from Gio van Bronckhorst’s sacking as boss.

The Rangers squad look set to return to training on Monday without a new manager firmly in charge although talks are not expected to drag on much longer.

It’s understood the Englishman is happy with his transfer budget for his Ibrox project amid fears he would have to rebuild van Bronckhorst’s group on the cheap with limited resources in the January transfer window.

The outgoing boss appeared to be pointing to budget issues yesterday when he broke his silence to explained why he flopped as Steven Gerrard’s replacement. Van Bronckhorst was binned after just one year in charge – with former chairman Dave King suggesting the manager was undermined by a series of broken promises from the boardroom over transfer spending.

Will Beale be more of a threat to Celtic than wee Gio?
