Michael Beale has admitted that there is no transfer war-chest to hit the January sales with.
Last January Nathan Patterson was sold for £6m with James Sands, Amad Diallo and Aaron Ramsey brought in on loan.
During the summer Giovanni van Bronckhorst created a £4.9m transfer surplus while being handed a joblot of crocks by Ross Wilson to improve the squad.
Van Bronckhorst’s frustrations boiled over in September when he admitted his squad couldn’t compete following successive 4-0 hammerings from Celtic and Ajax.
The recently published club accounts revealed a £900,000 loss for last season, with no European football in the new year and no Patterson to sell Beale will have to be imaginative when the January transfer window opens.
Speaking to Sky Sports the new Ibrox boss admitted:
The guarantees that I have are the same as the last two managers, if players are identified within the budget then the board has always supported that.
I lived in that for three-and-a-half years where I felt that at times we tried to push that a little bit to get more than what the club could do, but the club is definitely in a stronger position now.
What I’ve asked is let me look at the squad first, let me see who is here, let me see who is present.
Presented with similar options a year ago Gerrard was on a train to Birmingham.
