Celtic are reported to be showing interest in signing Alistair Johnston.

Despite the Scottish sounding name the defender is a Canadian internationalist, starting today’s 1-0 defeat from Belgium at the World Cup Finals in Qatar.

Johnston seems to tick a few boxes but the story seems to hinge on Josip Juranovic leaving Celtic in January.

Tony Ralston has been a very able deputy this season but if Juranovic leaves in January it is very likely that Ange Postecoglou will already have signed up a replacement to compete with Ralston at right-back.

The Sun reports:

CELTIC are weighing up a transfer bid for a member of the Canadian World Cup squad, SunSport understands.

Right sided defender Alistair Johnston – who made his debut at the global showpiece in Qatar against Belgium tonight – joined MLS side CF Montreal for £800,000 last December.

Johnston is halfway through a two year contract with Montreal who will be hoping that his appearances in Qatar generates interest from European clubs.

Canadian players are something of a rarity in Scottish football although David Wotherspoon and Scott Arfield have become Canadian internationals after coming through the ranks in Scotland.
