Stable place- Tom English on the Ibrox finances for Mick Beale

Tom English has finally got round to sharing his insight into the Ibrox finances.

Unsurprisingly the BBC Scotland reporter has an upbeat take on the accounts which revealed a £900,000 loss despite selling Nathan Patterson plus four full house knock-out ties in the Europa League on route to Seville.

English famously backed Craig Whyte all the way between 2010-2012, even after the Daily Record had given up on the former billionaire. The BBC hack might have got most of his glowing Whyte profiles removed by Google but the hard copies are still out there from his days as circulation for Scotland and Sunday crashed spectacularly.

Surprisingly English is sceptical of Mick Beale’s ability to transform things at Ibrox but there was positive news on the financial front.

On the BBC website he explains:

Ange Postecoglou changed Celtic by bringing in masses of energy and cleverness. The club funded it all largely on the back of the sale of two players – Odsonne Edouard and Kristoffer Ajer. Rangers really don’t have any marketable assets any more. They’ve sold them all.

That fiscal prudence has put them in a stable place financially and it’s a significant thing. However, the big picture doesn’t half get obscured when you’re toiling in the league and your rivals are threatening to disappear over the horizon. A healthy balance sheet didn’t save Van Bronckhorst.

Paying off a management team doesn’t come cheaply, or shelling out compensation to bring in a new one.

With a £4.9m transfer surplus generated during the summer while adding five new salaries to the payroll Beale will have to be imaginative with loan deals during the January transfer window.

A raid on QPR to sign Lyndon Dykes seems unlikely with Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent, Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack, Filip Helander, Steve Davis and Allan McGregor out of contract in six months time.

Can Celtic stop Michael Beale from winning the treble?
