Straw clutching- Kris Boyd’s petty jibe at Celtic’s Champions League campaign

Kris Boyd has come up with a bizarre dig at Celtic- they were knocked out of Europe before their city rivals.

After Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side became the worst ever in the history of the Champions League Boyd’s claim really is clutching at straws, using an argument best associated with the playground.

Celtic’s return of two points wasn’t great but it did represent avoiding defeat in two matches while their final action in this season’s competition was for Jota to curl in a brilliant free kick in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Picking up on Boyd’s comments on a podcast, the Daily Record reports him saying:

A lot of people forget that, despite it being a bad European campaign for Rangers, Celtic were out of the competition before them.

Boyd might feel that that issue is significant but it is unlikely that it will alarm many Celtic fans who have enjoyed the rough and tumble of the Champions League after a five year break. Six matches back in the big time in which Ange Postecoglou’s side had strong periods of possession, created chances but were let down by poor finishing.

Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley have competed well at the highest level possible less than a year after joining Celtic while Jota has the very decent record of scoring twice from 286 minutes of playing time.
