Barry Ferguson has criticised Ross Wilson for not signing his nephew Lewis, a move that almost certainly ends Uncle Barry’s dream of a place in Micky Beale’s coaching team.

In midweek, to justify the five year contract given to John Souttar, Wilson told the club AGM that it was important to sign Scottish players. UEFA require four club trained and four nation trained players in the 25 man squad for their competitions.

Lewis trained at Murray Park as a kid but was released by star-maker Craig Mulholland. The midfielder made his mark at Hamilton then moved to Bologna for £2m after four seasons at Aberdeen where he regularly scored penalties against Celtic.

It should have been a fairly straightforward task to take the Aberdeen midfielder to Ibrox but Wilson decided to throw around £12m on Ridvan Yilmaz, Ben Davies and Rabbi Matondo.

With no sign of a phone call coming in from Beale, Ferguson told the Daily Record about his anger that Lewis is impressing in Serie A rather than living the dream with The Tribute Act:

He would have been ideal for them. I’m not saying he would have been a certain starter but just being around guys like Jack, Steve Davis and Scott Arfield would have brought him on leaps and bounds.

But Bologna saw something in him that Rangers didn’t and now, if he continues the form he was showing before the World Cup, my old club couldn’t even think about affording him. It’s a shame but it’s also a sign that things are far from right on the recruitment side of things.

Wilson was heavily criticised by shareholders at the AGM but Managing Director defended the transfer guru claiming that he has done an incredible job.

After his not so magnificent seven summer recruits the pressure is on Wilson to deliver quality signings for Beale as soon as the January transfer window opens.
