Celtic have cynically used Ange Postecoglou to endorse the appointment of Peter Lawwell as chairman.

Confirmation that the club simply reshuffles the pack, repaying favours to former Clydeport executives was made at lunchtime today with the former CEO announced for a January 1 start, appropriately his first match will be at Ibrox watching the O** F*** match that was central to his 17 years as CEO.

Announcing Lawwell’s appointment Postecoglou told the Celtic website:

It is fantastic news for the Club that Peter will be taking up the role of Chairman.

He was instrumental in bringing me to Celtic, I know the love he has for the Club and I know that his wealth of experience and knowledge will be invaluable to us all as we move forward together. I would also like to wish Ian (Bankier) and his family all the very best for the future.

In December 2020 Lawwell announced a managerial review at Celtic, in February it concluded that Neil Lennon was the best man to take the club forward. It took Lawwell 106 days to appoint Postecoglou who went into the 2021 Champions League qualifiers with just Liel Abada, Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide added to the skeleton squad that he had inherited.

With no-one in the UK prepared to work alongside Lawwell a number of mainstream and fan websites were used to string along the near certain appointment of Eddie Howe as manager.

During Lawwell’s 17 years as CEO the hoops won only two UEFA knock out ties, against Teplice and Barcelona in 2004 a couple of months after Lawwell was appointed. In his 12 months in charge at Ibrox Giovanni van Bronckhorst won four knock out ties- against Borussia Dortmund, Red Star Belgrade, Braga and RB Leipzig.

At the 2019 Celtic AGM Lawwell smirked as he told shareholders that he had never seen the Five Way Agreement of 2012, at the 2022 AGM Michael Nicholson said that he had read the document and that a separate set of rules for one club wasn’t a handicap to Celtic

Lawwell is a popular figure in the boardrooms of Malmo, Maribor, AEK Athens, Ferencvaros, Cluj, Molde, Copenhagen and Sparta Prague.

During his last three years as CEO the club signed Vakoun Bayo, Marian Shved, Albian Ajeti, Vasilis Barkas, Hatem El Hamed, Ismaila Soro, Yousuf Mulumbu and Patryk Klimala on permanent deals, his final loan move was to bring Jonjoe Kenny in from Everton to replace Jeremie Frimpong.

    I am beyond angry.
I have sent this to the fan liaison officer.
To who it may concern or not concern is who i would like to find this email with.
I have just read Peter Lawwell has returned to the building, made chairman.
I am absolutely and wholeheartedly dejected by this decision.
The board have obviously no utter idea how much the entire support have been lifted, not just be Ange & his forward thinking but the removal of Peter Lawwell after his debacle of appointing Neil Lennon in a shower, his self appointed (ill chose who we buy) football director and his denial of ever seeing the 5WA when its common knowledge he had his hands all over it & in it.
His failure to even make any attempt at tackling the corruption at the heart of Scottish football & particularly Resolution 12.
My anger will wain, my decision – to never attend another football match, buy merchandise, or financially contribute to a club who’s leadership lacks any vision, lacks the ability to read the room and acts very much like the Whyte/Kelly’s in jobs for the boys – will not wain.
I have been on messages, twitter, Facebook & many fan sites and I believe this is just the beginning.
    With anger and much sadness.
    Craig Connolly.

You are so right Craig it beggars belief,I am disappointed that they’ve already got Ange blowing smoke up lawells arse, how stupid are our board, since lawell left there has been feelgood feeling and now we’re back to old Lennon in the shower appointment shite , I’ve got to think Ange got told to say all those platitudes about lawell, does Ange not know if Howe had taken the job lawell would have told him to do one ,I hope Ange sticks to his guns and doesn’t turn into a lawell arse kisser,I’m not sure about him now after that today.

  • Scud Missile says:

Well Ange better get them signings in the door before the CHISLING PONCE starts his cost cutting exercise by bringing in nickel&dime players,Ange will be away by the end of the season they won’t be able to work together,Ange is clever for him it won’t work.

  • Exiled in Ard Mhaca says:

What have we done to deserve this?

  • John S says:

Celtic have been doing so well without him. What does he add ?

  • Bob (original) says:

Just when the club seemed to be getting its act together, off the field… 🙁

As for “non-executive” Chairman: aye, very good.

An overbearing CEO for 18 years, and presumably most of the same staff are still there. Can’t imagine he will NOT be hands-on.

Must have been a tiny net which was cast to come up with Lawwell as the best candidiate. A parochial and tone deaf decision to have him back on the Board,

Did Desmond appoint him in the showers?!

  • the maister says:

Just when you thought things were going so well … the club suddenly rotates about uncle Peter again!

  • peter cassidy says:

liewell never left need to boost his small pension pot pathetic appointment celtic.

  • the maister says:

    Got any cigarettes, Peter?

  • the maister says:

    Have you got one?

  • Jim Duffy says:

Well well well,if this is not a backward retro step god knows what is ,Ange can forget about signing who he wants ,I can’t believe this Celtic board ,and Ange is virtually doing a Neil Lennon,Pete is the greatest blah blah , well I suppose you’ve got to kiss ass to your boss,I think all the good work since Ange come in is about to be unravelled, Ange and lawell are strong characters there will be a clash of personalities , Desmond will make sure lawell wins , Ange will fuck off and we’ll be back to square one ,Mr 5 way agreement wins again, disgusting.
