Brian Laudrup has ruled out an Ibrox return for Billy Gilmour.

The midfielder refused the offer of a professional contract from the Tribute Act, signing for Chelsea as soon as he turned 16 with every move in his career followed avidly in the Scottish media.

During 14 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions he managed to get a seat on the bench for the Champions League win over Manchester City which brought instant comparisons to Paul Lambert and Andy Robertson and a place in the Scotland squad.

Gilmour sank without trace at Norwich last season but that is beginning to look like a roaring success after Chelsea cashed in by shifting the former Murray Park starlet to Brighton in the summer.

At the age of 21 things are starting to slip away from Gilmour with many Ibrox fans hoping for a loan move in January to help fulfil his apparent promise.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Laudrup sees things differently:

Another season is threatening to drift away from Billy Gilmour. I am an immense fan of the 21-year-old. I genuinely think he can be the real deal, but he’s only played 12 minutes of Premier League football since Roberto De Zerbi took over at Brighton.

After a tough loan spell at Norwich City last term, I worry whether he is going to gain the chance he needs to fulfil all of his potential.

One possible answer? Leave England. To me, Gilmour looks like a player who would benefit immensely from going abroad.

I’ve read that Villarreal might be interested in taking him on loan next month and I could easily see Gilmour loving La Liga. His skillset could thrive in Spain, the Netherlands, France or even Germany. Places where the demands are just a little different from England.

Mrs Gilmour is likely to demand her boy joins a team that doesn’t play in green.
