Adam Montgomery’s future is up for grabs as his loan spell at St Johnstone comes to a close.

In the first half of last season the Academy graduate was a valuable squad member for Ange Postecoglou, playing for an hour away to AZ Alkmaar as Celtic hung on for a place in the Europa League group stage and providing the assist for Jota’s late matchwinner at Aberdeen that delivered the first away win of the season.

Going on loan to Aberdeen in January didn’t work out well but getting to St Johnstone in time for pre-season training has delivered regular first team football at a club that has pushed their way into the top six.

Callum Davidson has made good use of Montgomery but with his regular left-back, Callum Booth, returning from injury he has a few variables to consider while Celtic decide on the best route for their versatile 20-year-old.

Discussing an extension to the current loan, the St Johnstone boss told The Courier:

I wouldn’t rule it out is probably the best phrase to use. Adam has performed well, which I’m really pleased about. He’s got better and better.

We’ve got Callum (Booth) coming back – hopefully he’ll play his first 90 minutes (in a midweek closed-doors game) and we’ve got Tony (Gallacher) back as well. So we are quite strong in the area.

We need to assess everything, see where we are with each player and make a decision after that – and obviously speak to Celtic because it might be a ‘no’ anyway.

In contrast to the success of Montgomery, Ben Wylie has cut short his loan with Airdrie while Jonny Kenny is expected to switch from Queens Park to Shamrock Rovers.

Celtic host St Johnstone on Saturday, Montgomery has started 10 SPFL matches this season and made two appearances off the bench.
