Tobi Oluwayemi has joined Cork City on loan until the end of June.

The England youth international shared goalkeeping duties with Josh Mullen in last season’s Lowland League but has been first choice this term under Darren O’Dea and Stephen McManus.

Cork return to the top flight in the League of Ireland with a home match against Bohemians on February 12 to kick off the campaign.

Ex Celt Colin Healey is in charge of Cork, after winning the First Division he’s looking to re-establish his home town club in the top flight.

The Cork City website reports:

Cork City FC are delighted to announce the loan signing of Tobi Oluwayemi from Celtic.

The goalkeeper, who has been capped up to Under 19 level by England, will join Colin Healy’s side until the end of June, and he told CorkCityFC.ie that he was pleased to have sealed the move: “I’m really happy to be joining Cork City. I think this is a fantastic opportunity for me to do this. When I first heard that Cork City were interested, it was a move that I thought could be very good for me. I know Barry Coffey well from his time at Celtic, and he had a lot of good things to say about the club, about where the club want to go and the supporters. I am looking forward to getting over to Cork and meeting everyone.”

City boss Colin Healy welcomed the news saying: “We have been working on this for a while and we are delighted to get Tobi in. We have a very good relationship with Celtic, and we appreciate their help in getting this deal done. Tobi is a very talented lad, and we are looking forward to working with him over the coming months. He will strengthen our squad and I am looking forward to seeing him in training next week.”

Josh Clarke, signed from Glentoran last summer was in goals today for Celtic B against Gala Fairydean Rovers with other younger keepers pushing for promotion.

In recent seasons Celtic have had high hopes for Ross Doohan and Conor Hazard but not getting the right loans deals stalled their development.

Getting out for meaningful match time in the League of Ireland at the age of 19 should accelerate Oluwayemi’s development after spending the first half of this season working with Stevie Woods and the Celtic first team goalkeepers.
