David Martindale makes incredible Celtic wages claim

David Martindale has claimed that there is a Celtic player who earns the same amount of money as his entire Livingston squad.

The Livi gaffer seems to revel in the media spotlight- and is unable to draw a line when it comes to issues outside of his own club.

General comments on Scottish football are fair game but it is virtually unheard of for one manager to go into detail about the salary of an opponent. If Ange Postecoglou or Micky Beale did it they would create instant back page headlines.

The Sun reports Martindale saying:

What’s their budget? We are £1.3m. I know one player at Celtic who is on the same as our collective weekly wage. That’s where you are and you’d be foolish to go toe to toe with them.

It would be like racing a Ferrari with a Renault Clio. You are going to lose so you need to find a way to win the race.

The figure Martindale quotes works out at a top-line of £25,000 per week. Other than a couple of agents, who are very likely to respect confidences, no one is fully aware of pay structures within clubs.

Celtic players will be on bonuses for winning trophies, qualifying for the Champions League, winning individual matches while some players could have negotiated bonus payments for goals and assists.

Loyalty payments can also be made to entice players to stick to their contracts.
