Ajax have a £16m problem waiting on their next head coach.

Alfred Schreuder paid the price for carrying the former Ibrox star in his side, last week’s 1-1 draw at home with Volendam was one too many as Ajax sacked their coach.

Bassey was dropped for Sunday’s match away to Excelsior, Ajax won 4-1 after a run of three draws had left them in fifth place with their work cut out to claim a Champions League place.

Unlike the dishwater crew on BBC Scotland Dutch pundits are able to say the things that they think.

No one has been sugar-coating Bassey’s performances, he hasn’t been given ‘time to adjust to the pace of Dutch football’, no allowances have been given with Ajax having certain standards and expectations.

Last week Kenneth Perez described the former Ibrox ace as a joke that fell to pieces when that big round thing came close, at the weekend Rafael van der Vaart took things a step further as Football Scotland reported:

How is someone who played for Glasgow Rangers like Calvin Bassey going to be able to lead the defence at Ajax?

Where was the Ajax youth system? Was there no one there better than him? Because if there isn’t then you have a major problem. Sometimes it’s better if you don’t have any money because then you don’t do crazy things.

Then you wait for the right moment and occasionally take a chance. Instead they spent 23 million Euros on Bassey. Alfred Schreuder made too many big mistakes

Clearly there won’t be a Boumsong type transfer today, the add-ons expected at Ibrox from a £50m plus to the EPL can be completely written off.
