Once upon a time Charlie McCann was a Manchester United starlet and a youth internationalist for Ireland.

In July 2021 he moved to Ibrox, switched his international allegiance to Belfast and emersed himself in the local culture, mentioned in dispatches as the next big thing ready to break into the first team.

At the end of 2022 he wore the captain’s armband in the Lowland League derby at Celtic Park, giving it large when he scored to put the visitors went 2-1 in front with 15 minutes left to play.

Something happened that Rocco Vata took note of. Ben Summers equalised then McCann sliced one into his own net to put Celtic in front, two late goals from substitute Joey Dawson completed a solid win for the home side.

There was consolation for McCann when he made a very late substitute appearance in last week’s Viaplay Cup semi-final win over Aberdeen.

This weekend he is negotiating a transfer to League One strugglers Forest Green Rovers, quite a fall for staunch starlet.
