Chris Sutton has called out Willie Collum for failing to highlight a clear and obvious error from John Beaton at Ibrox.

Midway through the second half Carl Starfelt swung a shot goalwards, Connor Goldson raised two hands with John Beaton apparently missing contact with the ball at which point the VAR official appeared to step in.

Beaton held play up at a Celtic throw-in, after a brief pause play continued while television viewers watched replays of Goldson raising both hands to block Starfelt’s shot.

Celtic fans watched penalties being awarded against Alexandro Bernabei and Matt O’Riley in contrived situations before the World Cup break, at Ibrox on Monday Collum didn’t feel that the incident was worth a further look on the pitch-side monitor.

Reflecting on that incident and the aftermath, Sutton told Daily Record readers:

I don’t want to say I told you so. But I told you so. I said in my Record Sport column last week I was worried VAR might cause a problem at Ibrox and sure enough there was a big flashpoint with the Connor Goldson handball.

I don’t care what anyone says, or how some people want to pore over the IFAB rules in the search of a technicality. A penalty would be awarded down south every day of the week.

There should be no debate. Listen, I’m not saying Celtic deserved anything from the game on Monday. They escaped with a draw and will probably feel fortunate at that. But that doesn’t make the Goldson decision okay. It ended up honours even and as you were in terms of the points difference. That could have had a major bearing on the title race though. It still might.

I don’t blame John Beaton. He had a split second to make the call but that is why VAR is there. It’s to correct clear and obvious errors and they don’t come much more clear and obvious than that. For Willie Collum in the VAR hut to come to the conclusion there was no case to answer, and to not even invite the referee to have another look, was incredulous.

Should Michael Nicholson demand publication of conversations between Collum and Beaton?

Yes, we must have clarity and accountability

No, lets give VAR time to get over teething troubles

Sutton’s Daily Record colleagues were among those digging out an IFAB ruling and trying to apply it to the Goldson incident at Ibrox.

On Saturday Collum will referee Ross County v Livingston, the following day Beaton will be on VAR duty at the Motherwell v Hibs match which is live on Sky Sports.

  • Scud Missile says:

Every trick in the book is being tried to derail us , not a bad result against 13 ? Beaton and collum these 2 guys should look in the mirror and say yes i am a cheat, incidentally scud where did you get all this pish yesterday about Ange moving on do you not think there is enough people trying to stir up shit about us , and not our own.

If they are going to quote the rules, don’t leave half of them out…..

The reason it’s a stonewall penalty is that his hands are in an unnatural position whereby blocking a direct goalscoring opportunity.

NOT a cross, NOT a pass, NOT a deflection, NOT a ricochet…… A direct shot on target and, therefore, a goalscoring opportunity….

Willie Colum has shown many times over the years that he is inept at his job, but this horrendous VAR decision must end his grade 1 refereeing career, giving (standards) notice to other officials (;-0)

  • Unrepentant says:

Scud getting a hard time but would you want to work in as corrupt a workplace as Scottish football. Ange will have plenty of offers. The cowards on the board won’t lift a finger to solve the problem

  • Clachnacuddin and the Hoops says:

Having so called catholic referees (Collum and Clancy) not that I’d personally know their religion or none – is even worse than having Huns referee our matches… They are simply terrified of playing by the rules and be seen to give Celtic anything no matter how obvious it is within the rules…

We see NO favours guys – our only crime is fairness – is it too much to ask for that…

Catholic’s should be discouraged (heavily if need be) from joining The farce that is led by Crawford Allen and the SFA until there is total and utter reform there which will probably be The 12th of Never !

    • the maister says:

Just sit at the back of the bus with the Celtic Directors then?
Give Collum his due, he booked Jack for his “Tackle” on Giakoumakis at Ipox last time.
What happened? The card was knocked out of his hand, yes that’s right, knocked out of his hand by another player. So, who Ref’s the Referees?

  • Kevin Dunne says:

If goldson (hands-on) had been up other end and Celtic defender attempted to clear ball going straight toward his face, would he have put his hands up or tried heading ball toward goal ?!!!

  • John Devlin says:

It’s not only the Celtic game it’s the Hibs Aberdeen and even the Ross county game. Michael Beale by rights should only have accumulated one point from all those games if var had done its job correctly.
