I don’t believe he was telling the truth- Barry Ferguson accuses Ange Postecoglou

Barry Ferguson doesn’t believe that Ange Postecoglou tells the truth at his media conferences.

Success on the pitch and a single minded attitude off it has upset many in and around the Scottish game who laughed off the arrival of the former Yokohama F Marinos boss when he arrived at Celtic in June 2021.

Ahead of his first SPFL match Kris Boyd suggested that Postecoglou would be as well packing his bags and heading home with the Sky Sports expert looking more foolish with every passing week.

The ding-dong between the two Glasgow clubs in the SPFL Premiership is a regular source of conversation for Micky Beale but it largely passes Postecoglou by.

He knows the significance of the derby matches but there is much more to his job than providing easy headlines for the media to feed off.

Amid a frenzy of excitement for Postecoglou to move to Leeds United Ferguson told Daily Record readers:

I don’t know where Ange Postecoglou’s house is. But if someone would be kind enough to pass me his home address, I’ll gladly nip over there this afternoon and offer him a lift down the road to Leeds United.

Let’s be honest, they might not be willing to admit it but there’s hardly a Rangers fan out there who wouldn’t be quietly relieved if the big Aussie was tempted away from Glasgow for a shot at the English Premier League. And I’m pretty sure Michael Beale would feel the same way.

But there’s also a part of me that won’t be too disappointed if the Celtic boss says he’s going nowhere. Because I’m starting to really enjoy the potential rivalry between these two managers as well as the little bit of needle that is creeping into the relationship. Postecoglou fired the first shot on day one when he was asked about Beale’s appointment across the city.

He responded by saying, ‘I’m more worried about what I’m having for dinner tonight, mate!’. Some people will say he was being disrespectful. But not me. I personally loved it.

What he meant was that he’s only focused on what his side is doing. Nothing more, nothing less. And I like that mindset. But, at the same time, I don’t necessarily believe he was actually telling the truth.

On December 2 Postecoglou was asked for his thoughts on the new manager at Ibrox- one month and four matches before he would face Beale’s side.

His dinner would most certainly be of more interest as would be match at Aberdeen a fortnight away followed by fixtures against Livingston, St Johnstone and Hibs. Dropping points in any of those matches would have led to heavy criticism. Then he could assess the impact of Beale at Ibrox based on four matches played rather than media conferences.

Last season Ferguson lasted 34 matches as manager of Alloa, winning just 10 games. Perhaps if he watched and listened more to success stories like the Celtic boss he’d be on the inside rather than sharing his opinions on others with the Daily Record.

Two managers, with two very different records.
Barry’s Win Rate at Alloa was 10/34 = 29%. That’s an E- in academic terms.
Ange’s Win Rate this season is 23/25 = 92%. That’s an A+ in academic terms.
I know who I would rather believe! Ange, of course!
    No Contest!

I didn’t like Barry Ferguson when he played for Rangers. That said I his commentary is generally quite objective. Generally. I don’t think he’s a bigot, in the same way as I don’t think Ally McCoist is a bigot. Obviously he’s a Rangers fan and that’s as it is. I do think Big Ange’s remark about the appointment of Beale was spot on. I don’t think he might have been as casual had Rangers appointed Sean Dyche.
