Watch how Douglas Ross reacted to Green Brigade banner and chanting

Douglas Ross was given a fitting welcome back to Celtic Park as he took the line for the Scottish Cup tie against St Mirren.

The clearly overweight leader of the Scottish Tories, elected to Holyrood on the List system after failing to beat SNP in his own patch, seemed to get through the first 20 minutes of the match almost unnoticed.

Soon after Daizen Maeda opened the scoring the Viaplay Sports cameras focussed in on the Green Brigade as a banner reading VAR DECISION was unfurled. Once the editor caught a glimpse of the accompanying banner they swiftly moved back to the action on the pitch as the fans inside the ground broke into cheers.

In August 2020 Ross became leader of the Scottish Tories, elected unopposed to take over from Ruth Davidson.

Helpfully the SFA then provided him with seven weekend assistant referee appointments in Glasgow to tie in with his political activities.

All that physical exercises and juggling of his multiple expenses claims took their toll with a hamstring injury in January 2021 denying him one income source for a year as his waistline ballooned and chin disappeared.

This season he has been given four Premiership matches and six Championship games, yesterday’s appointment suggests that the SFA are keen to fast-track their favourite official back into high profile fixtures accompanied by match fees and very generous expenses including overnight hotels.
