Back in 2017 Jonny McFarlane made his entry into The Banter Years by claiming that although Kieran Tierney is decent Barrie Mackay was the outstanding talent in Scottish football!
Eventually McFarlane left the Daily Record for new challenges, much like Mackay who has ended up at Hearts via Nottingham Forest, Swansea, Fleetwood and a stint as a hair-dresser.
It takes a lot to beat that claim but the brains behind the Rangers Review and the Celtic Way has fired in a new contender, perhaps giddy from enjoying a Hall of Fame event for a club in their 11th season.
I know there are differing opinions but I think history will be kind to this call. If you go by data – consistently best player in Scotland over last five years. If you take a more traditional view look at the goals from RB. Top scorer in EL. Captain of the 55 team. Strong case. https://t.co/q4MlI0SG07

Going back five years to February 2018 you have a Celtic side with Scott Brown, Odsonne Edouard, Ryan Christie and Kris Ajer in absolute top form, winning trebles for fun.
Meanwhile Tavpen is toiling along, trophy-less but to be fair, now in 2023 he has the same medal collection as Jeremie Toljan and Filip Benkovic.
As for Callum McGregor, to quote an old colleague of McFarlane, his medal collection is off the radar compared to the guy that penned an article in the club programme explaining why he couldn’t cope with pressure.
