Celtic got away with a lot as refs were influenced by crowds & pressure via the media- David Tanner explains Celtic penalty statistics

David Tanner has explained the reasons why Celtic have had seven penalties awarded against them since VAR was introduced to the SPFL Premiership in mid-October.

The former Sky Sports presenter doesn’t offer an explanation for any other statistics such as why the club in second place hasn’t had a penalty awarded against them under VAR, this season or since January 2022.

Celtic are currently 27 goals better off than their city rivals after 29 matches, of the 21 goals that Celtic have lost in the SPFL a third of them have come from the penalty spot.

Willie Collum will referee Celtic’s match away to Ross County on Sunday.

Tanner left Sky Sports by mutual consent in the summer of 2017 after 19 years with the broadcaster, latterly as the face of their Scottish football presentations alongside Neil McCann.

Since then he has had a variety of minor broadcasting roles including a year presenting Hibs TV.
