Daily Record shares the details of Ally McCoist’s incredible scouting mission

The Daily Record has been comforting their readers with the news that Ally McCoist was the first person in football to notice the ability of Luca Modric, the Croatian could have been part of an all star midfield alongside Charlie Adam, Kevin Thomson and Barry Ferguson.

Back in the glory days of Dave Murray, McCoist found himself on a talent spotting mission in Croatia when a slightly built central midfielder caught his attention.

In April 2008 Modric joined Spurs in a £15m deal from Dinamo Zagreb, 15 months after the former Question of Sport skipper joined Walter Smith’s backroom team at Ibrox. At some stage in-between Coisty was in Croatia watching one of the greatest talents in the game, unfortunately Dinamo Zagreb weren’t prepared to accept the terms offered to them by Murray.

Three years later Murray sold his beloved club for £1.

In 2006 the unknown midfielder made two substitute appearances at the World Cup Finals in Germany having first appeared for Croatia as a 15-year-old in 2001.

Next week the Record are expected to share the story of how Alex McLeish almost ruined the career of Leo Messi by taking him out of the Barcelona Academy to play at Ibrox.

When McCoist took over from Smith in the summer of 2011 he did manage to sign Lee Wallace, Juan Ortiz, Matt McKay, Dorin Goian, Mervan Celik and Alejandro Bedoya.
