After his late night rant justifying SEVEN penalties awarded against Celtic, David Tanner made a sheepish return to Twitter on Thursday.
The former Sky Sports anchorman explained how VAR had overcome the pressure from home supporters and the media to deliver a stream of penalties against Ange Postecoglou’s side.
Effectively Selik had been getting away with it pre-VAR but now there was no escape from the all-seeing eyes of two VAR officials in a studio somewhere.
There is one incredible statistic that Tanner overlooked which is the 47 match run in the SPFL since a penalty was awarded against the Ibrox Tribute Act.
Back in 2020 and into 2021 Steven Gerrard’s side went 44 SPFL matches without having a penalty awarded against them, under Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Micky Beale that record has been extended.
Tanner was directly challenged over seven penalty claims since the World Cup break- he defended ONE of them but stayed silent on SIX penalties that should have gone against his club.
In 10 European matches this season non-Scottish referees awarded three penalties against van Bronckhorst’s side on their way to a place in the Champions League record books.
I’m repeating myself now:
Goldson v Celtic is not a pen.
It may have been in the past, but not under the current daft application of the laws.
Fans award them against rival teams using their belief systems and not what the refs are instructed to do.
I understand that. ??— David Tanner (@DavidTannerTV) March 30, 2023
Tanner’s belief system is very clear, apart from working alongside Neil McCann the last 11 years have been very painful.
Wow, you just ignored literally 6 other incidents that he listed ???
The incident against Hibs is 100% a penalty, are you going to deny that?
