Day 2 as the Daily Record follows up with the trashing of the Lisbon Lions

After the justified comments by John McMaster that Aberdeen’s Cup Winners Cup triumph in 1983 was a greater achievement than that of the Lisbon Lions the Daily Record has doubled down on their own stupidity.

Gordon Park has been selected to back up the Gothenburg case as the Glasgow based publisher takes advantage of the attention created by their claims from the previous day.

It would be a very lengthy list to explain why Celtic’s 67 triumph was better but frankly an insult to all involved to compare them to the third best team in Scotland during the 82/83 season.

Sure it was a fine achievement to bring a European trophy to Pittodrie but it is best leaving it at that instead of trying to compare against the greatest ever Scottish sporting achievement.

If the Record want to create a real debate they could compare the winners of the 1972 and 1983 Cup Winners Cup.

One team entered the tournament as Scottish Cup winners, played their match until the final whistle and defended the trophy the following season.

Those FACTS! However may be a bit uncomfortable for the Record’s ageing army of readers. The glory of the Lions will still be burning brightly long after the last copy of the Record rolls off the presses at Cardonald.
