Celtic are believed to have held talks with Bernd Reichart of A22 regarding his plans for a completely revamped European Super League.

Two years ago a plan for a 12 team Super League was rapidly ditched on the back of a furious backlash from fans of the English clubs involved.

Talks of Super Leagues have been on the go for decades with the evolution of the Champions League to provide group stage access to some clubs finishing fourth in their domestic leagues an example of how UEFA have had to move with the times.

Reichart is fairly vague with his plan with will include 60 to 80 clubs with the purpose to generate similar broadcasting revenues to the EPL which has put the rest of Europe in the shade.

However any set up that doesn’t include English clubs will have a credibility issue, whether broadcasters are prepared to bankroll a brand new concept also has to be questioned.

Picking up on the Scottish aspect with Reichart, The Daily Mail reports:

Asked if he had spoken to Celtic or Rangers, he said: ‘I talked to clubs from Scotland. But I must respect their confidentiality and will fulfil that. It is still the case that the whole system of UEFA is set up to control everything and I really hope that at some stage we will have another discussion about the future of European football.

‘It is striking to me that when clubs made a proposal for an alternative European competition they were threatened with being expelled.

‘I think that football deserves a more open dialogue and I can assure you that I have spoken to a lot of people who want to know what we are up to.

‘They want to learn about the court case, they want to know how our plans are evolving, but ask me not to let anybody know because they don’t want calls from UEFA.’

Clearly clubs need to be aware of what options are out there but it will take some very significant commitments to opt out of UEFA to join a rival organisation with massive complications over player contracts which are with the SFA who are members of UEFA and FIFA.
