Michael O’Neill has admitted that it will require a miracle to have Steve Davis back in action for Northern Ireland this season.

The midfielder is out of contract in the summer but hasn’t played since suffering a training ground injury soon after Micky Beale started delivering miracles to Ibrox.

Even at the age of 38 Davis is keen to add to his 140 international caps but he will have to find a playing contract somewhere next season if he is to claim cap 141.

O’Neill was asked about Davis ahead of last night’s home defeat from Finland with The Belfast Telegraph reporting:

Asked if there was a chance either could play in the June qualifiers against Denmark and Kazakhstan, with a wry smile O’Neill responded: “Definitely not Steven unless we get him to Lourdes or somewhere like that!”

Some of Davis’ club team-mates are more likely to appreciate a trip to Lourdes.
