Not been a great two or three days for Rangers and Celtic- McCoist reacts to Alonso attack

Ally McCoist has opted to lump Craig McPherson’s attack on Fran Alonso with the ‘missiles’ aimed at Steven Gerrard during Saturday’s Legends game at Anfield.

It is an incredible comparison with no reports or suggestions over the Anfield incident where a couple of paper cups were thrown at the former England captain as he raced to celebrate enthusiastically in front of 4,000 Celtic fans.

Anything being thrown onto a football pitch is wrong but headbutting an opposing coach is on a completely different scale, it is doubtful if McCoist has ever witnessed it in over 40 years in the professional game.

The former Scotland striker was involved in one infamous incident with Neil Lennon in 2011, although tempers were raised there was no contact between the two men on the touchline at Celtic Park.

Listening to McCoist’s radio discussion this morning The Sun reports:

Asked by co-host TalkSPORT Laura Woods if McPherson’s behaviour was acceptable, he said: “I have only just seen it. It’s really, really poor.

“With the greatest of respect, it’s not been a great two or three days for Rangers and Celtic, with what happened at the weekend and what happened last night.”

Woods added: “The weekend was the missiles right?”

McCoist replied: “Yes, very poor, very poor.”

Police Scotland and the SFA are now investigating last night’s incident.
