Report claims that Celtic are keen to avoid Police action over Alonso attack

Celtic appear to be looking for an apology from Craig McPherson rather than more severe action following the attack on Fran Alonso at an SWPL match on Monday night.

After a dramatic 1-1 draw at Broadwood that saw Celtic grab a stoppage time equaliser the hoops boss was on the pitch shaking hands with players from both teams.

From behind McPherson head-butted Celtic’s Spanish boss with coaches and players rushing to the scene to calm things down.

Sky Sports broadcast the match live but it was the McPherson incident that captured the headlines- bringing unwanted attention to the women’s game on their first screening on Sky Sports.

There has been little follow up to the incident but writing in the Daily Record Alison McConnell reports:

Celtic women’s boss Fran Alonso will tell the police he doesn’t want to press charges against Rangers coach Craig McPherson over the headbutt storm.

Although the cops have opened up an inquiry into the shameful scenes at Broadwood on Monday night when the two Glasgow sides drew 1-1, Record Sport understands Alonso doesn’t want to take the matter to the courts. But it’s believed the Spaniard does want an apology from McPherson who is also alleged to have called him a “little rat”. Celtic went on record to express their disgust while Alonso kept a dignified silence.

The SFA are unlikely to be as lenient as the Hoops manager, though. SFA compliance officer Martin Black has been alerted to the events that marred the game which was beamed live on Sky Sports – the first time a SWPL has been screened live by the broadcaster – and while the incident has not been fast-tracked, the international break this week should accelerate the process.

McConnell has a track record of being very accurate with news from inside Celtic Park, in February 2019 she exclusively broke the news that Brendan Rodgers was on his way to Leicester but doubled up with the news that Neil Lennon was Celtic bound as Rodgers’ successor.
