Mikey Johnston came off the bench to make his international debut, helping Ireland to a 3-2 win over Latvia in a friendly at the Aviva Stadium.

The Celtic winger replaced Michael Obafemi in the 64th minute and was instantly involved in Chiedoze Ogbene scoring what turned out to be the decisive goal in the match, netting after Johnston’s shot had came back off the post.

Soon after Johnston jinked in off the left wing but was denied a goal when his shot was blocked for a corner.

Ireland looked set for a straightforward win after goals in the first 20 minutes from Callum O’Dowda and Evan Ferguson.

It was the ideal start for Stephen Kenny’s new look side but before half-time Latvia were back on level terms.

The serious action gets underway on Monday in a European Championship qualifier at home to France, after tonight’s display Johnston will be hopeful that he can earn a place on the bench against the World Cup Finalists.
