Celtic fans weren’t slow to pile on the latest fantasy from the Daily Record.
Aimed at their declining army of readers the Record ran a story about how Aberdeen’s 1983 European Cup Winners Cup triumph was superior to Celtic’s 1967 European Cup win.
Aberdeen midfielder John McMaster holds that view, not so subtly the Record bundles together the Lisbon Lions with the 1972 European Cup Winners Cup which is utterly laughable on every level.
Celtic’s Lisbon triumph haunted Dave Murray throughout his time at Ibrox, from throwing about millions of overdraft at the Bank of Scotland through to accepting a pound coin from Craig Whyte in May 2011.
Similarly the Daily Record. Knowing that Celtic surpassed all other achievements in Scottish football in 1967 can’t be avoided, whenever any list is compiled it will always be what was second to the Lisbon Lions.
Thirty years ago Walter Smith’s heroes reached the last eight of the Champions League, it is only a matter of time before Mark Hateley or John Brown are sharing their views, again, with Record readers.

They still cant get over it, Celtic’s achievement was incredible, won it before Man Utd,Arsenal,Liverpool etc, also fantastic achievement for the Dons ,ask john if he would rather it had been the big one ? I think we already know the answer. FEEL THE PAIN .

Rangers journalist knows what support he is targeting with this typically poor article
Celtic won the no 1 trophy that’s still competed for today.
The trophy Rangers and Aberdeen won is now defunct

Wonder who will go down the plug-hole first – The Daily Ranger or Sevco f.c ?
They might even hold hands and go together.
Irrelevant rubbish both of them.
THEIRS ONLY ONE THING THAT BEATS 1967 AND THAT WAS VALENTINE’S DAY 2012 WHEN THE BIGGEST CHEATS OF SCOTTISH FOOTBALL RANJURS 1872 WERE LIQUIDATED AND DIED FOREVER RIP SCUMBAGS YER 2ND CLUB MIGHT BE JOINING YOUS VERY SOON EH..
Mind that time the MSM were saying the 2nd best team in Scotland that lost out to the 11th best side in Germany were as good as the Lisbon Lions?
🙂
The achievement on that wonderful evening of the 25th of May 1967, still echoes down through the ages. The original Huns went bust trying to match the feat. At least when Aberdeen won the ECWC in 1983, they did so as the previous season’s Scottish Cup Winners. A fine achievement by the Dons. The Rangers’ team that won the same trophy in 1972, only did so as the previous season’s runners up. In the year of their most famous victory, the Huns finished 16 points behind Celtic in the league.
Sure, weren’t the media stating if the new Huns won in Seville, that would eclipse the achievement of our bhoys in Lisbon?
Hail Hail.
