After trying to nurse a squad of players to a trophy over the last five months Micky Beale has admitted that the 2022 Europa League Losers need to gut their squad.

When he arrived at Ibrox in November the former QPR boss was keen to tell everyone that there wasn’t much wrong with the squad but the reality has been clear to see.

Laboured victories on the back of highly favourable VAR decisions is no basis for going forward, with three defeats in their last four matches reality is starting to sink in with Ibrox fans that Beale has been delaying the inevitable.

Seven first team players are out of contract plus Malik Tillman is due to return to Bayern Munich. It is hard to make a case for retaining any of them, a record of two trophy wins doesn’t look like increasing anytime soon.

John Lundstram, Borna Barisic and Kemar Roofe have a year left on expensive deals and have made virtually no positive contribution this season.

It looks like Beale will need more than Norwich utility man Kieran Dowell to get through two rounds of Champions League qualifiers and find a squad capable of halting Celtic.
