The Celtic Trust have taken Humza Yousaf to task after the First Minister criticised hoops fans over unacceptable behaviour at their weekend title party in the Trongate.

The ‘event’ was basically publicised through social media with little in the way of planning although Glasgow City Council and Police Scotland would have been aware of the plans.

From mid-afternoon the streets in the area were closed off to traffic as thousands of fans celebrated their team winning the SPFL Premiership title for the second year running.

Football fans and the authorities have a strained relationship at the best of times, for the European Championships in 2021 fan-zones were set up to allow supporters to watch matches while drinking alcohol.

There was no match to watch on Saturday but with Glasgow Green five minutes walk away something could have been arranged with skips provided to minimise litter and allow the city centre to operate as normal.

On Saturday Celtic fans could well be celebrating a domestic treble and although the kick-off at Hampden is five hours later if Celtic win fans are likely to gather again around Glasgow Cross.
