Jeff Stelling signed off from Soccer Saturday with a double dunt of Celtic successes.
For 30 years the Hartlepool fan has presented the show, flashing around the stadiums while picking up the views of expert pundits plus Kris Boyd.
Stelling has covered the most dominant period in Scottish football with the hoops collecting 16 of the last 20 domestic trophies.
Saturday’s show featured regular updates from the SPFL trophy presentation, rolling the clock forward 24 hours the scene shifted to Hampden and another piece of silverware returning to Celtic Park.
Picking up on his farewell weekend the Daily Record reports:
It was a day of celebrations and thank you messages – but Rangers were served one final jibe by Jeff Stelling as he stepped away from Sky Sports.
The sports broadcast has been at the TV giants since 1992 and is synonymous with their Soccer Saturday show, and he got a standing ovation on Sunday afternoon as he hosted his final show.
It ends a run of almost 30 years as the flagship goals programme’s anchor and it came on the day Fran Alonso’s Celtic Women’s side triumphed over Rangers Women’s side in the Scottish Cup final.
But as the game started to edge towards a green and white victory in the 2-0 victory – goals scored by Natasha Flint and Claire O’Riordan – Stelling took a subtle dig at Rangers by pointing to Ange Postecoglou’s team winning the Scottish Premiership.
Celtic captain Callum McGregor lifted the trophy on Saturday after beating Aberdeen 5-0 at Parkhead.
And Stelling was all too aware of that. He said: “It’s the Women’s Scottish Cup final as well and like the Scottish Premiership, to be honest, it’s going Celtic’s way.”
This Saturday, the first Post-Sterling Celtic can add the Scottish Cup to their collection, completing their fifth treble in seven years.
Would I have loved to have seen big fake Kris Boyd’ s coupon when the brilliant Jeff Stelling made the comment ? Just like 2 fried eggs on a hotplate !
