In this crazy world of Scottish football- Ange bites back at BBC reporter’s squad claim

It seems that context is something that bypasses the crazy world of Scottish football.

With four matches left to play Celtic won the SPFL Premiership title at Tynecastle, unfortunately they have taken just one point from the first three of those remaining games.

The net effect is negligible but after dropping points in just four of their first 34 SPFL matches it seems odd watching Postecoglou’s side losing twice and drawing in a three match sequence.

While there is plenty for the Celtic boss to reflect on there is a clear over-reaction in elements of the Scottish media reading way too much into end of season results.

Three winless games between August and April is a serious problem, after the title is won it is more of a quirk or eye-opener.

Listening to the post-match coverage on Radio Scotland, Football Scotland reports:

But when journalist McLaughlin asked if it meant he’d perhaps need a stronger squad to go again next season, the Australian wasn’t happy. He responded: “Come on mate, come on. What do you want? Do you want us to win the league by 20 points next year, is that the thing?

“I get it, I understand the questioning. But you know what, if you want to measure us on the last three games, by all means. But you probably need a different manager (to do that).

“This squad has handled Champions League, it’s in the final of a cup, it’s already won one cup. We’ll strengthen as we always do.

“In this crazy world of Scottish football, if you can’t see what the obvious is…if you want to make assumptions that we won’t be as good next year then that’s great.”

Postecoglou is due to face the media again on Friday as he previews the final SPFL match of the season, at home to Aberdeen with the SPFL trophy presentation following after the final whistle.

I don’t think it is ‘cracked crest’ time but this is worrying. In truth, Celtic have been poor since February. We never stop has became Not at our best. The past 5 games have told a story, Terrible against Motherwell, then outplayed against Hearts, until they got a man sent off, Horsed by them, nicked a point against St Mirren and battered last night. Rangers will be taking huge encouragement from this. And more worrying, so will ICT. They know if they have a go they might score. If they score first they have a real chance. After playing poorly and knocking them out I would have said Celtic were 99.5% sure of winning the Cup. I would say it is now about 80%. Is something wrong? Why the ‘down tools’ approach? Fair enough performances dip when the league is won, but not for a full month surely?
