Neil McCann suddenly gets gobby as Ange Postecoglou departs BBC

For a couple of minutes Neil McCann stood alongside Ange Postecoglou on the BBC Scotland podium at Hampden.

The state broadcaster seemed embarrassed to be covering yesterday’s match, demanding that the kick-off is put back to concentrate on events at Wembley then being denied extra-time in London which meant that the Hampden match was shown on BBC One Scotland and not shunted onto the digital station BBC Scotland which barely attracts 30,000 viewers for their flagship news show- The Nine.

Steven ‘lump of wid’ Thompson is still trying to understand what broadcasting is about, put into a live setting and presented with Postecoglou the former St Mirren striker utterly melted, fluffing his way through a few predictable questions, asking about Spurs and running a mile from the answer.

Rarely has it been so obvious that a presenter was reading out questions and comments written by someone else. McCann opted not to intervene and ask a question.

Fooling no-one as he tried to play the likeable neutral McCann had lots of qualified praise for Celtic’s display but couldn’t hide from his excitement over the possible departure of Postecoglou.

Last weekend of Sportscene he was joking with his EBT pal Thommo about how good it will be if Scottish football loses its greatest talent.

Tuning in to Sportscene from Hampden, Football Scotland reports McCann saying:

I think they (the fans) could be disappointed. I think this will be Ange’s last game in charge and if it is to be that, what a wonderful way to go.

He’s a guy who can go down there (to Tottenham) on his own because he won’t need to take a big staff with him. I think Ange is so bullish in own ideas and how he wants to implement that, that he’ll go there and make his mark immediately.

He’s now suddenly going into a realm of a different stratosphere in terms of finances if he takes a job like Spurs. Best stadium in the world, amazing training facilities and a transfer budget he can absolutely smash it and show how good he is in that environment.

Following the 1999 Scottish Cup Final McCann attended a post match party with his mate Donald Findlay.
