Brendan Rodgers answers the £15m question

Brendan Rodgers has told Celtic fans not to expect players coming in costing £10m or £15m.

Last summer the club spent a total of £20m in the transfer market with £6.5m spent on Cameron Carter-Vickers and the same sum on Jota.

Earlier this month Celtic informed the Stock Market that they would be recording greater profits than forecast but so far that hasn’t been evidenced in the transfer market.

In the summer of 2018 Celtic spent £9m on Odsonne Edouard who was clearly identified by the manager with Rodgers making it personal to secure the young Paris Saint Germain striker.

With two weeks to go until the SPFL gets underway Celtic fans are becoming concerned about the lack of transfer activity.

Addressing expectations, Rodgers told the Daily Record:

For me on a personal level the club has a model it works to and I’ll work within that. But there seemed to be a different narrative about me coming back here.

It felt like it was people who don’t know me were creating a story around ‘why would he come back?’ It was like ‘he must be doing it because of the war chest he’s being given.’

It does make me laugh when I read it. But it’s one where I will work within the model of the club and the club has a business model which has been really successful.

We will look for players who are first-team ready. But we’ll also look at players who we can bring in and develop and move on. That’s the nature of it.

Look, there are levels to it all. You could bring in a player at any cost because if he’s a good player he’ll have value. That’s what we want but I’m not, in any way at all, demanding that we need to sign three players at £10m or £15m. That’s not the case.

Celtic appear to be close to signing Maik Nawrocki from Legia Warsaw with that deal being priced at around £4m.

First time around Rodgers had Champions League qualifiers to get his squad ready for, although Celtic are through to the group stage they face trips to Pittodrie and Ibrox in the opening four SPFL fixtures.

Well done to Brendan for dispelling the myth (created by the lying Scottish Media according to Celtic Blogsphere) and just to sew discord between Hoops fans – that he’s content with what he’s got and not the unashamed Lies they write according to Hoops forums…

Whoever you purchase Brendan make sure they can meet The Sevco Huns Head on – brick for brick, boot for boot, and bottle for bottle !

  • Scud Missile says:

I told you all on here earlier Rodgers and LIEWELL have fall out,now it’s out there no big money transfers coming to Celtic.
LIEWELL has put his foot down and Rodgers is on the brink of walking out.
Forrest from the Celtic blog was laughing and bragging about all our money in the bank earlier and it will stay there, because our club ain’t spending big on players.
We are buying nickel&dime players to the same value as sevco, that’s our level,LIEWELL is back and so is the biscuit tin mentality.

Where are you getting this info. from…??Doesn’t sound right to me…So explain please.

    • Onthe says:

People that refer to Peter Lawwel as “Liewell” I automatically assume they are Huns

Editor: Did you miss the 2019 AGM?

“I’m not, in any way at all, demanding that we need to sign three players at £10m or £15m.”

      Don’t think anyone expects that.

But, maybe one player in that price change?

BR is careful with his words.

The buying model has to be slightly tweaked to get a better outcome in Europe?

Any model is not static, and evolves to maintain its value.

We are led to believe that progress in Europe is now a priority (?),

so a different approach is needed to get a different result.

    • Davie says:

Peter Lawell has no say in any celtic signings, that was stopped by DD after the Lennon Lawell fiasco and the threats on all their families.
DD took action and removed Lawell from the CEO position, lawell is now a chairman with little power to do anything at Celtic other than talk.
DD has Assured Brendan that he will get what’s is deemed feasible, there will be no gross spending just to spend money, celtic are a business and all expenditure has to be justified with profitable sell ons, whether that be a player, mgr, coach, or executive.

  • Johnno says:

The backbone of this Celtic squad is going to be built upon the 25 man squad for the CL campaign, yet the numbers involved still don’t add up, which remains a concern.
2 gone from last season, yet on the brink of 5 bought in, and still fairly unclear on who will be the 8 making up the Scottish contingent.
The keeper position is far from resolved either, and keeping Hart and big Ben as no1 and 2 is hardly the best resolution imo, and even more so with money available to secure the position long term.
Didn’t expect this window to be easy to get all the answers from questions that were arising towards the end of last season, yet a bit concerned that no solutions in a few key areas still hasn’t been addressed either at present

Why are we so obsessed with having to an announcement of a marquee player? We have a team who just won a treble, yes we have lost some of our favourites, including the manager. It’s time to get a grip on reality, Celtic football club is a business and one that is doing very well.
This old adage of wearing your heart on your sleeve is long gone the bosman ruling took care of that even sevco did with their tax evasion. The realism it’s a job if someone comes calling with more money for your services then it’s down to you to make that choice. We love our football team ?? and we have a great team and savvy business heads in the background. Yes, some tweaks are required but let’s not go overboard because the smsm are indulging in there usually antics

  • Amcq14 says:

Reading back on the comments already made about this article I would say I am not a fan of lawell either however, not spending big, do we really need to? And reaching for the old biscuit tin, now there’s a quote I would associate with some old journo that should have been put out to pasture years ago

  • Terence Nova says:

I don’t know anyone at Celtic Fc….so I rely on using the grey matter to arrive at conclusions…And I am of the opinion that BR would have discussed what money would be available to him and ALL aspects of transfers, before agreeing to return…I refuse to believe that there is now infighting between him and Lawwell on this subject…..But…and its a BIG BUT, If its true…then we are in a mess….We should also remember that Scottish football might not be a magnet for £10 million plus players.

  • Davie says:

There is no need for big money to be spent on one player, it would be unlikely that a good sell on fee would be achieved.
Scout potential signing properly, avoid the Lawell penny pinching signings which I am sure has been adressed by DD and Brendan on his agreement to come back.
Good quality signings that can be signed for a decent fee and developed are necessary for all scottish football clubs.
Celtic have several players in that bracket.
Don’t worry or listen to bad mouthing from supposed fans.
Brendan has his plans in place with DD, any issues are discussed between them and not Peter Lawell.
