Xavier Mbuyambas expected move from Volendam to Sampdoria has stalled with the Dutch side rejecting the offer from Sampdoria.
The 21-year-old has already spent time with Barcelona and Chelsea before returning to Holland where he has had two seasons of the first team football that every prospect requires.
Stephen McGowan of the Daily Mail credited Celtic with an interest in Mbuyambas before attention switched to Maik Nawrocki who seems to be close to completing a move from Legia Warsaw.
That deal has still to be completed, tonight Dutch website Football Transfers reports:
FC Volendam has rejected Sampdoria’s offer of 1.6 million euros for Xavier Mbuyamba , Voetbal International reports. That amount could have risen even further if the club, which was relegated to Serie B last season, returned to Italy’s top level. A contract is already ready in Genoa for the 21-year-old defender, who also likes a switch himself. For the time being, however, his club will lie down for a departure.
FC Volendam does not seem too keen on the departure of another strongman. The North Hollanders previously said goodbye to Filip Stankovic , Gaetano Oristanio and Francesco Antonucci, among others, who were all sold.
At this stage of the season there are many moving parts in the transfer window, a further factor is the reported interest in Carl Starfelt from Spartak Moscow.
That deal seems fairly far fetched on a number of levels but with Cameron Carter-Vickers absent there is little doubt that the Celtic defence is far more vulnerable.
After returning from Japan where 22 players featured over the two matches Brendan Rodgers now has a clearer picture of the squad that he has inherited- and what needs strengthened.
The Celtic boss is expected to be questioned on transfer issues when he hosts a media conference to preview Saturday’s match against Wolves in Dublin.
