Rodgers makes transfer plea to Lawwell

Brendan Rodgers has sent fresh plea to Mark Lawwell to deliver first team starters.

So far in the transfer window Celtic have added four prospects plus Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke to compete for places in central defence.

Jota, Carl Starfelt and Aaron Mooy have robbed the champions of three top performers with the injuries to Cameron Carter-Vickers and Reo Hatate leaving Rodgers short on quality.

At their best last season Ange Postecoglou had a strong 14 or 15 man squad, allowing him to bring quality off the bench to make a difference.

This season there has been nothing like those options on the bench with Kilmarnock and St Johnstone able to cancel out last season’s free flowing scorers.

Rodgers has revealed that his job is to work with the players that he is provided with from the Recruitment team which is headed by Lawwell.

Covering today’s post-match media conference The Sun reports Rodgers saying:

I spoke to the club when I first came in and assessed the squad, and we need to improve the quality in there.

There have been a number of names mentioned but as soon as we sign anyone we’ll let you know.

I’m hopeful of some new ones coming in. I said before that we’d improved the squad with some of the players we’ve brought in – but we need to improve the team.

Luis Palma appears to be on his way to Celtic from ARIS Thessalonika but with the Champions League starting next month Celtic are in a serious need to bring in tried and tested first team players.

Playing the guy who scored 34 goals last season in the penalty box and not so far back might be a start

  • Stewart says:

New quality signings are always welcome,, although we’ve lost a couple through transfer and retirement,,and injury that team are still very much the side that done a treble and free flowing football a couple of months ago,,what we’ve watched last couple of weeks resembles what type of football we played at the end of lennon tenure,, Rodgers has got to change tact and get this side playing as we know it can

  • Martin Blackshaw says:

Lawwell is not supposed to have anything to do with recruitment, so is there something we’re not being told about this spectre at the feast? I agree with Harold Shand when he says Kyogo should be in the six-yard box where he does his best work, not halfway up the park trying out some new tactic for hapless Brendan.

The Board are destroying what Ange put in place, a great fast-paced and deadly team reduced to a confused and disjointed rabble – and not looking very happy either.

I lost £1500 on my coupon today because Celtic failed to score 2 goals at Parkhead against lowly St. Johnstone. Even a 1-1 draw would have got me through, but 0-0? I never in my wildest imagination thought the game would end with that disastrous result. Really depressed tonight because of that, but also concerned that Rangers will have a field day next week at Ibrox. Rodgers’ style of play is outdated and boring, we need a young, hungry manager with proven results to come in and take over, but not before that Lawwell character is booted straight out of Parkhead and told never to return. He couldn’t care less about results and the fans, he’s only interested in making profit for shareholders and bunging himself big bonuses. It has to stop. There’s no way we can go back to that after the 2 years of progress under Ange.

    • Seppington says:

He means Mark Lawwell, who very much does have to do with recruitment, and seemed to be doing just fine until his arsehole father walked back in the building….

      • Martin Blackshaw says:

I should have stipulated that I was referring to Peter Lawwell, who clearly still has “daddy” control over his son.

  • KC67 says:

Typical Celtic board never build from a position of strength. If things don’t improve quickly we’ll be back to the fans v the board with the barriers going up.

The Lawwells have got 5 days to fix this shambles. Or face the wrath of the fans.

    • Martin Blackshaw says:

The first step is for Rodgers to get that team back to playing the way they did under Ange. His old-fashioned tactics are clearly not working, so he has to learn from the previous manager and return to a winning formula while there’s still time. If he does that and adds a few quality players, then we’re good to go again. If he sticks with his side to side, bore you to sleep method, then 6 Ronaldos won’t stop the decline.

  • John says:

Huns will take 5 off us next week if we play the same way as the past 2 weeks, we’ve been crying out for quality replacements not more projects, replace like for like or even better, no we replace with projects.

This has Peter Lawwell written all over it, shambles not to push from strength to strength, get the players in or get the barriers up

  • Stesano says:

No more of this ” Ange built” garbage Celtic always played front foot pressing type football!! Always!! It ain’t complicated either he never invented ” f&K all! This the fat Aussie that was angling for a move for 6 months taking zoom calls while our manager!! That’s a fact well reported in Australia to total lack respect that chancer!!Living in Australia for years I knew he do that ” EPL” sychopants! Are Aussies tho it’s deeper than that. But bit respect for the man that started the Trebles and for me won 3! And his methods enabled 4! Is Brendan!! So no more this ” Ange” love in! The guy be back iin Australia soon enough Brendan 10 ti es the manager he will ever be and 10 years younger more or less!! This cult of the Aussie has spread down there but no more this bs!! We were garbage last 3 months of the season to ! And crap in Europe!! No more this guy!! FFS!

  • Stesano says:

10 timess the manager the Aussie will ever be!! And way better guy to believe that , It’s time Brendan put his foot down and clowns realise we are lucky to have a guy of this calibre!! The prick lawell as chairman not ” non Executive”now eh Chairman!! That’s the real issue he may not be hindering it but his presence akone is bad!! For us!! The chancer should never been here!! Turn your rage where it belongs!! We need our club back guys like him ! Made themselves multi millionaires and help create a nepotism through our club! That’s the issue!! Disgust me him being there wake up!

  • Johnno says:

So now, turning the blame upon new signings not being up to standard, and yet getting more new signings is going to be the answer to the current shit show?
    What nonsense.
Address the real issues currently on show more like?
8 started today who have been a huge part of our success of late, and only 2 of them got passed marks, the rest varied between very poor to absolutely useless.
How can that rapid decline happen on a consistent level now, to players coming off the back of treble winners?
New players need time to be integrated within a team, where the more senior and experienced players should be able to help that process run smoothly.
It’s just not happening between manager, coaching staff and treble winning players, resulting in a complete shambles currently.
Alarming the dip in form, upon players we become so reliant and dependable upon over the last few seasons.
Serious questions need answering now before it becomes even more embarrassing.
Rodgers is the main culprit at present, and such a lame excuse of wanting new 1st choice players required when nothing been said about the ones that contributed so much, currently providing nothing.
Rodgers was meant to improve our current crop and strengthen the weekness that existed, yet all he’s managed to do to date is,
Made our strengths none existent, and our weekness within the squad, down to pub level.
Can’t see were the improvements are going to come from, when the reliable ones within the squad are playing so poorly with whatever Rodgers is trying to install within a treble winning team.
Something will have to give, and unless drastic changes happen over the next week, which I remain very doubtful of being achieved, then Rodgers will have to go imo to salvage this season

  • the maister says:

This has all the makings of a Shakespeare Farce, comedy and Tragedy too!

  • Anthony McGonigale says:

When all is said and done Ange spent 2 seasons turning a poor Celtic team into a fast paced attacking force that the fans loved. To now watch the team play under Rodgers is like a step back to the failed 10 in a row season and it is nothing to do with players but more to do with tactics . Our players thrived playing Angeball but now you can see the frustration on their faces. Wake up Brendan and change your tactics before it’s too late As for Peter Lawell, get rid .

  • Pan says:

Rodgers has inherited an excellent squad and has taken no time whatsoever to demolish any coherence and positivity that they had. Kyogo looked like a wee lost bhoy yesterday. The players all looked genuinely unhappy yesterday and unable to gel. I have a very bad feeling about the relationships at the club, which have gone from being sound to possibly disastrous. Yesterday, I had a feeling of déjà-vue. I have seen this movie before and I have a feeling that we are about to be watching repeats.
The Board and the Manager are responsible for what happens – nobody else. Ange was on top and took no nonsense from the Board and the club purred like a well-oiled machine. He is now doing the same at Spurs. I wonder if the realisation came that he would be held back if he stayed.
As fans, we could do something about this, but I know in my heart that we won’t. We will just keep taking what Lawwell Inc., throw at us.

  • Martin Blackshaw says:

A lot of good common sense being written here. The players, apart from Turnbull, are proven quality, proven winners. The problem is that Rodgers has changed the tactics and knocked the life out of them. He must return to the original tactics at Ibrox this weekend or it’s good night Vienna.
