Brendan Rodgers has given an evasive answer to the last mystery of Celtic’s summer transfer activities.

On Deadline Day he told Sky Sports that he was hoping that there would be deals confirmed before the midnight deadline on September 1.

Celtic did announce the loan arrival of Paolo Bernardo from Benfica but Rodgers’ use of the plural put supporters on alert for more than one deal being announced.

There was no speculation over any late near misses with attention soon turning to the September 3 challenge of taking a seriously depleted defence to Ibrox.

Kyogo Furuhashi’s goal at Ibrox ensured a very pleasant international break for all connected to Celtic but that transfer issue remained unanswered.

QUESTION: I know that you said in one of your interviews that on transfer deadline day that you maybe expected a few more to be announced, that didn’t quite transpire in the hours after that. Were there deals that maybe didn’t get over the line that were expected to or were close?

BR: (Paused, shook his head, smiled) We’ll talk about that in January. We’ve spent enough time talking about that over the summer so I don’t need to speak about that now.

With the sales of Jota and Carl Starfelt during the Transfer Window Celtic made a substantial profit in trading, possibly as much as £7m going on fees available in the media.

Having to assess the squad, work on recruitment and deal with so many injuries in defence was a lot to ask for of Rodgers but it sounds like he already has definite plans for January.
