Barry Ferguson is consoling himself with the view that Philippe Clement was the choice of Graeme Souness to succeed Micky Beale in charge of the Ibrox Tribute Act.

Fears that James Bisgrove and John Bennett were wholly in charge of recruitment process were allayed when it was leaked that the former Sky Sports pundit was involved in the process.

That picture of unity provided plenty of comfort to bears as the decision boiled down to Kevin Muscat or Clement.

On Sunday Souness’ name was included in the media release announcing the appointment of the Belgian, unfortunately on Monday morning Jim White let slip on TalkSPORT that Frank Lampard was the choice of his close buddy Souness.

Completely ignoring that issue Ferguson shared his Souness joy with Daily Record readers, explaining:

It’s been interesting to hear from James Bisgrove on how he and the board sought out Graeme Souness’ advice and assistance while going through the interview process.

From what the chief executive has told us, it seems like my old Blackburn boss and the Belgian went at it during their talks in London, exchanging views and challenging each other on how they see the future of Rangers panning out.

And believe me, anyone who can stand up to Graeme Souness and hold their own when he’s in full flow deserves serious consideration. I was really excited to sign for Souey when he asked me to join him at Ewood Park back in 2003.

Souness hasn’t been involved in management since being sacked by Newcastle United in February 2006, a year after splashing out £8m on Jean-Alain Boumsong from his old pal Dave Murray. Boumsong played 18 matches for Rangers.
