Late on Saturday night Sky Sports News delivered the big breaking news- either Philippe Clement or Kevin Muscat will replace Micky Beale at Ibrox.

For over a week Sky and virtually every other media outlet has been running with the same names without any detail into the recruitment race.

The need to stay in the loop of being drip fed information from club ‘sources’ ensures that there is no discussion other than fawning profiles of the guy sacked by Monaco in June after 73 matches in charge.

In contrast Muscat lasted 14 matches with St Truiden in Belgium in 2020, the only time that he hasn’t inherited a squad built by Ange Postecoglou.

There has been no attempt to find out what is causing the delay which is either a split in the Blue Room meaning that the Chairman John Bennett has a different preference to CEO James Bisgrove or they have been unable to put a package in front of either candidate that they will sign up to.

While the dynamic duo are in London doing nothing in particular Muscat is in Japan going through business as usual with Yokohama F Marinos while most other leagues halt for international fixtures.

It looks increasingly likely that Steve Davis and Alex Rae will be preparing Beale’s squad for Saturday’s match against Hibs, if things don’t go to plan the search then switches to Billy Davies or Derek McInnes with David Martindale or Robbie Neilson brought in to the management team to reassure fans that they have some True Blues in the dug-out.

On October 6 Sky Sports reported:

Sky Sports News understands Rangers have a shortlist of candidates in place to succeed Michael Beale.

The 43-year-old was sacked on Sunday, however, as part of the club’s succession planning process an evolving list of options has been in place for a number of months.

It seems that succession planning has hit a bit of a road block.
