Daily Mail’s incredible spin on desperate Ibrox finances

Daily Mail readers are being steered towards the idea that Marseille have snatched Josh Doig away from a stunning move to Ibrox.

The French side are reported to have upped their bid for the Verona defender from £4.3m to £4.8m but there is no mention anywhere in the story about a bid from Philippe Clement. There is mention of Verona looking to replace the former Hibs defender with Ridvan Yilmaz coming in on loan.

While the headline comforts bears that their club is spending big the actual story is of desperation to shift some of Yilmaz’s wages with the hinted at swap for Doig never getting off the ground.

Anyone with a basic grasp of football finances would realise that there is virtually no chance of £4.3m being spent at Ibrox this month, if Clement gets half of that figure he’ll probably be surprised.

Closer inspection, on a football level reveals that Borna Barisic could soon be the only left-back remaining at Ibrox.

With the Croatian out of contract at the end of the season and vulnerable to injury it seems like the Ibrox bean counters are playing a high risk game.

Barisic isn’t the only Ibrox star that can sign a pre-contract elsewhere at any time, John Lundstram, Ryan Jack, Leon Balogun and Kemar Roofe are all out of contract at the end of May.
