Even Sky Sports are calling out the latest Ibrox ‘honest mistake’

After Celtic’s draw at Aberdeen anticipation was sky high at Ibrox on Saturday with Livingston the visitors.

Without an SPFL win in 15 matches and managed by Davie Martindale a routine home win was expected to cut the gap at the top of the table down to three points with one game in hand.

Things weren’t quite running to script with half time approaching but from a 40th minute corner kick John Beaton opted to take a back seat for an incident that would be called foul at any other SPFL Premiership fixture.

Connor Goldson raced in on goal with his foot raised to threaten Livingston defender David Carson, catching him on the thigh. Beaton conveniently missed it with the ball breaking to Fabio Silva who netted from close range.

Newbie official Matthew MacDermid, another from Lanarkshire was on VAR duty, knowing the stakes at play and looking to continue his progress up the ladder he knew better than to step in and correct a very clear foul missed by his senior colleague Beaton.

Dermot Gallagher usually views incidents similar to Kris Boyd but on this occasion he couldn’t go with any decision other than a foul was committed.

With Willie Collum off the menu Saturday was the second time this year that Beaton has refereed at Ibrox. Tomorrow night Aberdeen visit Ibrox where they will be up against Don Robertson as referee with Ayrshire’s Greg Aitken as back up on VAR.
