BBC Scotland reporter can’t hide his Europa Cup grief

It was hard to tell who was the most despondent at Ibrox last night- the losing players on the pitch or the BBC Scotland team on the media gantry.

True Blue Kenny Macintyre was in his element pre-match as he went down Memory Lane with Stuart McCall and Steven Thompson as they purred in anticipation over another awesome night at Ibrox.

Why McCall was drafted in is something of a mystery when Kenny Miller, Billy Dodds or Neil McCann know the script off by heart, especially when Macintyre asks them for an insight into just what it is like in the dressing room ahead of those big matches.

When it comes to cheerleading for the Tribute Act Nick McPheat takes a bit of beating, providing live coverage on the BBC website he just couldn’t hold back on his own disappointment while urging his heroes to bounce back domestically.

With a recruitment system that has brought Macintyre and Alasdair Lamont through from their student days there are certain characteristics required to cut it with the state broadcaster. The DNA that brings in Miller, Dodds, McCann and Thompson to lead the line as pundits and presenters.

Given the chance to share his wacky sense of humour, last month McPheat explained why Celtic losing one SPFL title in 11 was tin pot.

With the numbers of people buying the BBC licence McPheat might soon be taking his tin pot ability onto the market to search out exciting new opportunities.
