The Daily Record is refusing to give up on their campaign to get Jack Butland into the England squad.

For weeks on end the floundering Glasgow based publisher were taking it for granted that the Ibrox ‘keeper would be on duty against Brazil and Belgium as he forced his way into Gareth Southgate’s Starting XI.

A special edition had been prepared to celebrate the England squad announcement but in line with almost all of the Scottish media they were left with egg on their face when the 26 man squad was announced with the 31-year-old as close to a recall as Joe Hart.

Barry Ferguson took the news from Southgate especially badly claiming that he squad announcement was a slap in the face for Scottish football.

Undeterred by reality the Record has relaunched their bandwagon, turning to former Manchester United defender Wes Brown for his thoughts.

Brown was at Murrayfield in midweek to promote a friendly between United and Philippe Clement’s side with adult tickets starting at just £38.

In these situations the former player is going to play ball with the questioning, whether it was Butland, James Tavernier or John Lundstram they were going to be talked up.

Mission was accomplished, the Record can now reference the backing of former Manchester United and England legend Brown when they reheat their Butland cap call yarn.
