Jack who? England snub for Ibrox hero despite Scottish media frenzy

There has been a remarkable backlash to the announcement of the England squad for two friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.

Despite the incredible hype there is no place in the 25 man squad for Jack Butland with Gareth Southgate selecting three ‘keepers ahead of the former Crystal Palace reserve.

The 31-year-old won the last of his eight caps in 2019, despite his outstanding work dealing with pass-backs against Dundee and Ross County he won’t be adding to that tally any time soon.

This summer Butland can look forward to a long holiday while Jordan Pickford (Everton) , Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal second choice) and Sam Johnstone (Crystal Palace) represent the three lions at the European Championships in Germany.

Back in 2012 Fraser Forster earned his first England cap as a Celtic player, in 2014 he was included in the squad for the World Cup Finals in Brazil.

Playing in the Europa League is unlikely to get Southgate excited, in three meaningful domestic matches Butland has lost out twice to long range efforts from Kyogo Furuhashi with only an honest mistake from Don Robertson sparing him from a red card in the final of the League Cup.

The England ‘snub’ wasn’t the only disappointment for Butland today with Benfica ending his dream of reaching the Europa League Final with the Portuguese winning 1-0 at Ibrox.
