Pots and kettles as the Record hits out at the crackpots

The Daily Record claims that anyone joining the dots regarding refereeing issues in Scotland is a crackpot.

That is their take from Peter Grant’s appearance on Go Radio yesterday, a regular source of content for the Record as their readership and budgets fall off a cliff.

There is nothing crackpot about highlighting David Dickinson getting appointed for his third SPFL match involving Philippe Clement’s side since January 26 while Willie Collum is allocated around matches involving the 11 other Premiership clubs.

When the SFA hand Don Robertson successive Celtic matches either side of a Notice of Complaint against Brendan Rodgers it isn’t crackpot to highlight the timing while Collum’s exile extends to into a 12th round of Premiership fixtures.

Only a crackpot wouldn’t be able to join the dots between Crawford Allan‘s decision to ‘pursue new opportunities’ and a Notice of Complaint being served on Rodgers and the actual hearing.

The Daily Mail revealed that SPFL clubs had passed a motion of No Confidence in the Head of Refereeing.

Only a crackpot wouldn’t be suspicious of Allan staying in charge till the end of the season, making the appointments that will go a long way towards deciding which Glasgow club gets a £40m boost from a place in the new look Champions League.

Brendan Rodgers being banned from the touchline against Rangers will result in a Celtic double whammy to fuel the conspiracy theorists.

That’s according to Peter Grant, who is predicting that Rodgers’ absence from the touchline will see imaginations run wild ahead of the Parkhead boss’ tribunal hearing. He’s up in front of the Hampden beaks on Thursday after being taken to task for his comments regarding officials following the champions 2-0 defeat to Hearts at the start of the month.

He told Go Radio: “If Brendan Rodgers misses the Rangers game for whatever reason, you know what people are going to be saying. You know it’s going to be making a mockery of Scottish football.

“In respect of that, you’re going there without fans and your manager (on the touchline). You know the conspiracy theorists everybody talks about? That will be building up. You know what everyone will be talking about if Brendan is banned for that game where the away supporters are already away from it.

There is no mention of crackpots in Grant’s comments, they tend to be the ones putting together the pages at the Record which managed to shift an average of 52,000 sales a day during February.

Any review of John Beaton’s decision making throws up some vast contrasts, that isn’t a conspiracy, it is factual.

If Connor Goldson charges into the Livingston six yard box Kung Fu style in the build up to a goal for Fabio Silva Beaton sees nothing wrong with it.

When Yang Hyun-jun raises his foot from a stationary position against Hearts Beaton suggests a VAR review with his buddy Don Robertson happy to take the opportunity to red card the Celtic winger.

On 2 January 2023 Beaton awarded a penalty at Ibrox when Fashion Sakala dived into Carl Starfelt’s leg. Soon afterwards when Goldson raised his hands to block a shot from Starfelt inside his own penalty box Beaton looked the other way, waving play on.

Today is the day Celtic board should stand up and say enough is enough.
Expose the 5 way agreement or forever be complicit in its arrival and use.

  • Bob (original) says:

    Whatever the outcome today,

our club should be making a big noise publicly

about the need to improve the standards of match officiating.

And keep making public comments right up to the derby game.

Keep the focus on the match officials.

There might still be ‘well dodgy’ ref / VAR [non] decisions in the game,

but afterwards, our club could keep the momentum going until

the SFA does actuallly does something?

If the SFA wants to charge the club for its comments – let them.

[But, would be very surprised if PL or MN actually do say anything publicly?]
