Matt O’Riley is incredibly laid back about the transfer opportunity that was taken out of his hands during the January transfer window.

During the first half of the season the midfielder was easily Celtic’s best performer, showcased by his appearances in the Champions League despite many of his team-mates appearing to be overwhelmed.

That form and a call up from the Danish international squad put O’Riley in the spotlight with the prospect of a move to a club that faces Borussia Dortmund for a place in the semi final of the Champions League.

There are bound to be some ‘what if’ moments for the midfielder as he endures spring time in Scotland but in trademark fashion he was giving very little away in an interview with Danish website Tipsbladet:

Now Matt O’Riley confirms the Tipsbladet’s story.

Celtic received an offer from them (Atletico Madrid, ed.) and it was cool. I wasn’t really close to leaving because Celtic wanted more money, says Matt O’Riley to Tipsbladet and the other press in the national team’s camp in Helsingor and continues:

This summer, Matt O’Riley again has the chance to move to Atletico Madrid or another big club, but he is trying to put that part aside and focus only on the end of the season in Scotland.

– We have to see what happens, he states.

Over the next week O’Riley will be pushing his case to be in Denmark’s squad for the European Championships in Germany.

Home friendlies against Switzerland and the Faroe Isles seem like favourable fixtures for the laid back midfielder to kick on at international level.

After that is is back to the bread and butter of the Tony Macaroni Arena on March 31 knowing that it may well require an eight match winning run to secure O’Riley’s third SPFL winners medal.

O’Riley reminds me in some ways of Rogic.
They both possess very clever instinctive skills…and are technically very good.
O’Reilly, however, works much harder than Rogic did…but lacks a physical presence and is prone to losing too many tackles.
Based on his recent performances, I’m not sure he will be in the same high demand that he was…but let’s hope that he gets back to the skilful levels we all know he has….’Cos on his game he is superb.
    Hail hail.
